Tunisia - Dirt Roads II - Ksars

The Rugged Rides 12/13/2025

Southeastern Tunisia is mostly wide-open desert valleys, endless rocky tracks, and lots of Ksars. These are fortified villages typical for Berber culture, often used as storage for food and valuables, places of refuge in times of danger, and hubs of local trade and community life. They're made up of so-called ghorfas, small storage rooms stacked on top of each other, sometimes up to five stories high, with no windows and tiny doors. Each ghorfa belonged to a merchant who stored their goods there.

Today, Ksars stand empty, often right in the middle of the desert or hidden in the mountains. What makes them so special is that many are still freely accessible, untouched and original, with no fences or tourist setup. They're living proof of what these places once used to be. You can experience them pretty much the same way European explorers did 200 years ago.

We're closing the loop and heading back to the port.

You keep asking if Tunisia is good for riding?

Yes. Very much yes.
