Weekend - Sand

The Rugged Rides 5/12/2026

The drought issue in Poland is becoming a hot topic, seriously… the first dust storms, farmland turning into semi-desert, rivers hitting historically low levels, and at the same time the reckless policies of the State Forests around draining wetlands, digging drainage ditches, and so on.

I hate mud, I love dust and sunshine, but honestly, can any of this still feel comfortable once you start thinking about the long-term consequences?

This weekend I headed north, towards Warsaw, following the eastern bank of the Vistula, actually one of my favourite places lately. And yes, it's dry. Properly, brutally dry. The same tracks that used to be deep mud are now soft sand. At some point I realised that probably 80% of the track I've covered was either sandy ruts or full-on sand roads.

Africa? Or the mighty Polish Erg?
